Rich Evans SEMA Challenger Blog
October 12, 2010 With the Challenger build moving along at a steady pace, I'm pleased to say that we already have four, out of the nine, molds completed. This means that I now have the parts that I need to finish this project. The completed molds include the left and right rockers, left and right flares and the hood scoop. I'm still working on molds for the front spoiler, rear spoiler and rear wing mounting plate. Now that I am half-way through the molding process, I am getting more excited as I see the project come together. I’m also in the process of tearing down the Challenger for my paint scheme. To do this correctly, I need to remove the doors, hood and trunk panel. When painting a vehicle, I find that I get the best results when I paint the pieces individually. As far as the paint process, I’m going to put my base color down, clear it, sand it with 800 grit and put the car back together for a pre-mock up of my graphics. This allows me to line everything up so that the graphics are perfectly aligned from panel to panel. I will then disassemble the vehicle again and paint each piece. Now, let's move on to the motor. I'm pleased to announce that I just got word from the Mopar® team that the motor is completed and on its way to my shop. I'm told that this engine will be producing well over 550 horsepower, which makes the hair stand up on my arms! I've also been working on the wheels. This will bring more life to the car and make a huge difference when it's unveiled. These wheels will be 20" by 11" in the rear and 20" by 9" in the front. The design will be machined and cut by Mike Curtis at Mike Curtis Speed Equipment. I am also excited to share that I have created a left- and right-side graphic for the Challenger. I will be working closely with Mopar® on potential validation of this graphic so that anybody working in their garage will be able to purchase these graphics, as well as the body parts to transform their vehicle with great looking additions. As I previously mentioned, I'm getting a lot of help from Stitchcraft. These folks are working day and night to finish off the interior and are doing an amazing job. I would also like to thank Katzkin® for providing us with the quality materials needed to get this done. Lastly, I just received a new product from Mopar® which is going to allow my hood scoop to be functional. Once again, Mopar® is providing me with the equipment that I need to make this Challenger perform to its best potential. So what I have left on my checklist is the paint, motor, and production of the parts. I'm now really getting down to the final elements. This is probably one of the most involved and well-rounded projects that I have had the pleasure to work on, and it's all thanks to the help of the Mopar® team. I would like to chat more, but I don't want to give away too much. You'll have to visit us at SEMA to see this creation come alive. Until next time!
